As we spend more and more time in our gardens and on our patios garden furniture has fast become a fashion statement. Gone are the days when everyone has the same white plastic chair set, and now we can choose from a variety of materials for our garden and furniture patio including teak, stone, aluminum, and synthetic resin weaves.
These Patio Furniture collections are made on heavy gauge 100% aluminum alloy extrusions with uniquely supported inner walls. The frame is finished with a multistage deluxe powder coat process giving unsurpassed long lasting quality and resistance to corrosion, abrasion and blistering. This environmentally friendly patio furniture is made from polyethylene, which is non-toxic (even when burned, no toxic substances are generated) and it is 100% recyclable.
Before you buy your garden furniture its important that you do some basic research to increase your chance of buying the furniture that is right for your needs and is durable and long-lasting. The first decision is whether you want your furniture to me a feature in your garden all year round, or if you want foldaway / stackable furniture that you can store in the shed or garage over the winter months.
Selecting the right material and type of construction is very important. You need to decide what kind of material will best suit your garden.
If you want your garden furniture to stay outdoors permanently then you it would be recommended that you buy aluminum, teak, or wrought iron furniture that is well treated. Or even better furniture made from the new synthetic resin weave materials. The best woods are tropical hardwoods which are high in natural oil, like teak, iroko or courbaril. These woods are weatherproof, but will require maintenance to keep them in good condition. Even teak and iron furniture can require annual maintenance to keep their new look, but the synthetic weaves require little or no special maintenance other than wiping down with a damp cloth now and again. It is well worth spending a little more on this type of garden furniture as it will last many many years longer than the other materials.
If you are choosing teak garden furniture make sure that it is high quality and free of knots and cracks. It should also have been dried in a kiln to optimize the moisture content that will help retain the furniture’s shape and prevent bowing etc. Also make sure that any bolts used in the build of the furniture are of a corrosion resistant metal such as aluminum.
It is common to see algae growth on wooden furniture of this kind, but this can be cleaned off with water containing a small amount of bleach. Other minor stains can be removed with a light detergent and rinsing off with water. In very dry weather cracks can appear in the wood grains, but this is nothing to worry about much as when the atmosphere changes back to be more moist the cracks will tighten back up. This is a natural expansion / contraction of the material. Teak oil can be applied on new furniture that will help maintain a new look for longer. The wood must be completely dry when applying teak oil or the wood will darken.
Wrought iron garden furniture can be great looking, but it is much heavier than the alternatives and more difficult to move. Iron also rusts so you need to be very careful that it is coated and re-coated to keep it from rusting. Initially it is recommended that you only buy wrought iron furniture that has a two or at least one corrosion year warranty.
Purchasing outdoor furniture covers will also help minimize your maintenance and increase your furniture’s lifespan. However if you buy stone or synthetic wicker furniture you’ll have practically no maintenance worries.
