It is a common misconception that ‘wicker’ refers to the furniture’s material. It is rather the weave pattern that is called wicker. So wicker furniture can be made from a variety of different natural materials such as cane, ratten, bamboo, reeds etc., as well as new synthetic woven wicker styles that are almost identical to their natural counterparts. With the many different materials to choose from the looks and durability of this furniture can vary widely.
Rattan has been used as a material for furniture throughout history and remains popular today. the outer part of the material is stripped to use in the weaving, the core of the plant can also be used in the furniture’s framework. The plants solid core gives it great strength and can be painted, stained, or varnished.
Cane comes from a layer of rattan plant bark just under its outer layer. Because of canes natural glossy finish it cannot be painted or stained. It is good for wicker furniture and is often used for weaving seats of backrests.
Reed comes from the inner part of the rattan plant and can come in many different sizes and shapes. It is porous and can be painted, stained, or varnished. It is not as strong as the other materials and can snap if too much pressure is applied, so will tend to be used more for aesthetic elements.
Bamboo is very different from rattan although it is commonly mistaken for the same material. Bamboo has a hollow core with ridges where the leaves grew. It is because of the materials hollow core than lets it break easily, so it is not the best choice for rattan furniture, but is more suited to other furniture items that don’t need to support any stresses.
Synthetic woven wicker fibers won’t fade, even if it’s exposed to extreme weather conditions during summer and winter. The patio furniture is resistant to rain, salt water and chlorine. It is safe to be used at the beach and by the pool, even suntan lotions and creams aren’t a problem.
